The great Gurus and the Cycle of Knowledge

The great Gurus and the Cycle of Knowledge

(By Rajul Tiwari)

If it wouldn't have been the Gurus of the great Indian Legends, their life wouldn't have reached the supreme summit and they wouldn't have fulfilled the purpose of being in this life on this earth. Concept of Gurukul in Ancient India had Rajkumars (princes) and normal (knowledge seeking) young children learning under one bower (All equal). They followed discipline as the way of life and subjected themselves to harsh environment, woke up before the dawn cracked, collected twigs, flowers and fruits in dense woods, washed and cleaned utensils, cleaned the premises, went to collect bhiksha... learnt how to read and write, learnt the way of life from Vedas and did meditation several times a day. Vedas were resource of their learning like modern guides, from Mathematics to Science to Social Science to the order of Politics (Neetis and Kootneetis) to the art of War everything was taught in Gurukul. Pupils had fun discussing the wonders of Nature on a Nature walk with their Gurus and they also played games, climbed trees, developed friendships for life in Gurukul. They learnt from apparently harsh punishments, their devout love and respect for their Guru always got rewarded in to one or the other "Siddhi" and "Asheesh" which in turn made them more confident to face life after Gurukul. They didn't even meet their parents.

Lord Krishna and Lord Balram learnt under the guidance of their Guru Sandipadi. Pandavas learnt from Kripacharya and later, Dronacharya. Rama, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan learnt under Guru Vishwamitra. The experiences they had in Gurukul prepared them for their larger struggles of life so much so that physical problems like sleeping on floor, working day in and day out to keep the soul intact... didn't bother their ultimate goals! They learnt to concentrate against all odds... on their aim and the reason behind their fight of life.

In Modern age, Swami Vivekananda learnt from Shri Ramkrishna Paramhans (A Guru for whome all religions were the pathways to One lord, who practically lived as a Muslim, Christian and Hindu at different points of life and attained the state of Supreme Realisation while being in all of them), he passed his legacy of knowledge to Narendra Dutta (Swami Vivekanand) and who took this to the world later, he made people understand that life shouldn't be the way of Religion but Religion is nothing but a way of life. His speech in Chicago Conference had the world United in one understanding of religion.

I have just given a few examples, the journey of knowledge, tolerance, determination and self-consciousness in India through Gurus is too vast to get compiled in one write-up. Today, on the eve of Teacher's Day, I remember all the great Teachers whose selfless job of molding the legends and even Heroes of our Nation has made India distinctly rich in knowledge. Teachers polish heroism of different cadres and heroes/legends are born, these fine men and women lead an inspirational life and lessons are drawn, these lessons reach us in books and paths are shown. Let us Learn.
